What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that is used to improve the texture, tone, and overall appearance of the skin. It is a popular treatment for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their skin and address various skin concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. Microdermabrasion is often performed in a clinical or spa setting and can be used on the face, neck, chest, arms, or other areas of the body.

How Microdermabrasion Works

Microdermabrasion works by gently exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. This is achieved using a specialized machine that emits fine crystals or utilizes a diamond-tipped wand to abrade the skin’s surface. The exfoliation process helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and stimulate collagen production. As a result, it can improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promote a more radiant complexion.

Advantages of Microdermabrasion

Grand Cayman Microdermabrasion has the following advantages:

  • Non-invasive: Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical and non-invasive procedure, making it a safer option compared to more aggressive treatments like chemical peels or laser resurfacing.
  • Minimal discomfort: Patients typically experience minimal discomfort during the procedure, often describing it as a mild scratching or tingling sensation.
  • No downtime: There is little to no downtime associated with microdermabrasion, allowing patients to resume their regular activities immediately after treatment.
  • Versatile treatment: Microdermabrasion can effectively address a range of skin issues, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, and uneven skin texture.
  • Improved collagen production: The exfoliation process can stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and a youthful appearance.

What to Expect Before Microdermabrasion

Before undergoing microdermabrasion, it’s important to have a consultation with a licensed practitioner to discuss your specific concerns, expectations, and any existing skin conditions.

Nurse Kelly will provide specific pre-treatment instructions to ensure the best clinical outcomes. These include the following:

  • Apply a moisturizer to your skin.
  • Apply a toner to your skin.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure or sun tanning.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications, supplements, or herbs.
  • Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser.

What to Expect During Microdermabrasion

During the procedure, you will typically recline in a comfortable chair or treatment bed. To minimize discomfort, a numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area. The practitioner will then use the chosen microdermabrasion device to exfoliate your skin gently. You may feel a mild scratching or vibrating sensation as the device is moved across your skin. The entire procedure usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Microdermabrasion Recovery Time

One of the advantages of microdermabrasion is the minimal downtime. After the treatment, you may experience some redness or mild swelling, but these effects usually subside within a few hours to a day. You can immediately return to your regular activities and skincare routine but it’s essential to protect your skin from sun exposure and follow any post-treatment instructions provided by your practitioner.

Conditions Treated by Microdermabrasion

At Nurse Kelly Dermasweep Grand Cayman, this versatile treatment can benefit individuals with various skin concerns, including:

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Microdermabrasion can treat fine lines and wrinkles by exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin, removing dead skin cells, and stimulating collagen production. As the procedure eliminates the damaged skin, it encourages the growth of new, healthier skin cells. Over time, this can lead to a smoother, more youthful complexion with a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

In a single-center study, participants underwent a 12-week biweekly microdermabrasion procedure on the face and neck. [1] Additionally, they applied hyaluronic acid serum twice daily at home, following a basic skincare regimen. The combined treatment was assessed through clinical quantification, bioinstrumental measurements, and digital photography. The results showed significant improvements in fine lines, skin dryness, smoothness, radiance, firmness, and hydration just 15 minutes after the procedure. These improvements persisted at week 12, along with enhancements in skin tone evenness, hyperpigmentation, photodamage, and water loss. Overall, the treatment was well-tolerated and highly satisfactory, highlighting its potential for effective skin rejuvenation.

Ten participants received six aluminum oxide microdermabrasion facial treatments spaced 7-10 days apart, with skin biopsies taken before, after three, and after six treatments. [2] The results revealed thickening of the different skin layers (dermis and epidermis) and the presence of newly deposited collagen and elastic fibers. These findings suggest that microdermabrasion triggers a reparative process at both the dermal and epidermal levels, contributing to clinical improvement.

In another study, 40 adult volunteers aged 50 to 83 years with photodamaged forearms (premature skin aging characterized by fine lines and wrinkles) underwent focal microdermabrasion treatment using diamond-studded handpieces of varying abrasiveness. [3] Biopsies were taken at different time points before and after treatment to assess changes. Coarse-grit microdermabrasion led to a rapid wound healing response, including epidermal changes, inflammation, matrix degradation, and significant dermal remodeling, characterized by increased production of type I and type III procollagen, as well as collagen production enhancers. Notably, medium-grit handpieces did not achieve the same dermal remodeling effects. These findings suggest that the choice of handpiece abrasiveness plays a crucial role in inducing dermal remodeling through microdermabrasion.

Treatment Options

Microdermabrasion can treat fine lines and wrinkles by exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin, removing dead skin cells, and stimulating collagen production.

Acne Scars

Microdermabrasion can help treat acne scars by exfoliating the top layer of the skin, which can reduce the appearance of shallow acne scars. The procedure uses a machine to spray fine crystals or abrasive diamond tips onto the skin’s surface, effectively removing dead skin cells and promoting collagen production. Over time, this can lead to a smoother skin texture and a reduction in the visibility of mild to moderate acne scars.

In one study, researchers conducted a thorough review of the last decade’s literature to assess the effectiveness and adverse effects of prevalent treatments for post-acne scarring. [4] They identified 36 pertinent articles covering interventions such as subcision, dermabrasion, microneedling, dermal fillers, and chemical peeling. Subcision displayed variable improvement rates ranging from 10% to 100%, while microdermabrasion yielded the least significant outcomes. These findings suggest that microdermabrasion may help treat post-acne scarring.

Fourteen patients underwent a 12-14 week course of microdermabrasion treatments. [5] Self-assessment questionnaires administered before and after the treatment series revealed statistically significant improvements in skin roughness, mottled pigmentation, and overall skin appearance, though not in rhytides (wrinkles). While acne scarring occasionally improved, more substantial treatment was necessary for severe cases.

In another study, seven patients receiving oral isotretinoin for acne treatment with atrophic (indented) acne scars on their faces underwent localized dermabrasion in a 1 cm² area. [6] A 6-month follow-up revealed normal wound healing without hypertrophic scarring (thick, raised scar) or keloid formation, leading to excellent revision of atrophic acne scars. These findings suggest the need to reconsider the current recommendation of waiting 6 to 12 months after oral isotretinoin treatment for acne scar revision with dermabrasion. Performing a small test area abrasion may serve as a useful predictor of wound healing, potentially enabling earlier acne scar treatment through this procedure.

Treatment Options

Microdermabrasion can help treat acne scars by effectively removing dead skin cells and promoting collagen production.

Aging Skin

Signs of aging skin include the development of wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven pigmentation, which are characteristic of both chronological aging and photoaging. In addition, as skin ages, it tends to become thinner due to a decrease in collagen and elastin production, making it more susceptible to damage and becoming less resilient. Regular exposure to UV radiation from the sun exacerbates these effects, contributing to the overall aging of the skin.

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that can help treat aging skin by exfoliating the outermost layer of the skin, which often contains dead skin cells and fine lines. During the treatment, a machine uses tiny crystals or a diamond-tipped wand to gently remove this layer, stimulating collagen production and promoting a smoother, more youthful complexion. While it can provide temporary improvements in the appearance of aging skin, multiple sessions are usually needed for more significant and long-lasting results.

Microdermabrasion, an office-based mechanical resurfacing technique, was evaluated in a study involving 20 patients with photodamaged skin and fine wrinkles. [7] After eight microdermabrasion treatments, results showed significant improvement in skin discoloration and increased epidermal thickness. Patients were highly satisfied and experienced minimal side effects, making microdermabrasion an effective, noninvasive, and safe method for rejuvenating aged skin and reducing certain pigmentations.

A study assessed the effects of microdermabrasion on skin rejuvenation in eleven women undergoing abdominoplasty. [8] Microcrystals of Al₂O₃ were applied to a specific skin area while the opposite side served as the control. The results revealed temporary hyperpigmentation and histological improvements in the epidermal layer, including increased thickness and collagen synthesis. However, these epidermal changes were not observed in the dermis. In conclusion, the study suggests that, under the tested conditions, microdermabrasion positively influenced skin structure and could be a viable option for promoting skin rejuvenation.

In another study, ten female volunteers aged 38-52 underwent six diamond tip crystal-free microdermabrasion facial treatments at a 7-10 day interval. [9] After each treatment, half of the face received an antioxidant serum rich in polyphenols. Skin biopsies and Raman spectroscopy were used to assess skin characteristics and polyphenolic antioxidant levels before and after the study. Results showed that the combination of microdermabrasion with the antioxidant serum significantly increased epidermal and papillary dermal thickness, fibroblast density, and collagen fiber deposition. Skin polyphenolic antioxidant levels also rose by 32%. Clinical efficacy ratings and photographic evidence supported these improvements, suggesting that incorporating a polyphenolic antioxidant serum into microdermabrasion can enhance its benefits as a non-invasive facial rejuvenation technique and underscore the role of topical antioxidants in anti-aging skincare.

A study aimed to assess the effectiveness of microdermabrasion in treating photoaging and evaluate the compatibility of a cleanser and lotion with the procedure. [10] Sixteen women received six weekly microdermabrasion treatments along with a personalized skincare regimen. Safety and efficacy were assessed. The results indicated significant improvements in fine wrinkles, dullness, pigmentation, and large pores by the third treatment, with continued enhancement throughout the study. The subjects perceived improvements in facial photoaging variables, and the skincare regimen was well-tolerated.
